99 Explorer sport woes
 

99 sport with OHV 4.0 and 5R55E trans 4x4.
Lost power and died. Engine seemed very hot when it quit running. Temp gauge was reading a little above midway. Turns over but sounds weird/different and will not start. Check engine light on and code reads P0340 camshaft position sensor. Towed the truck back to the house and ordered the syncro asy with new sensor. No change, turns over and sounds weird/different (has a peculiar squeak as it turns over) and no start. I'm not 100 percent sure I got the sensor asy back in correct. I can smell fuel and I am getting spark. Not sure about compression yet. It really sounds as if it was out of time? Oh 180k on the odometer. Has always ran great since we've had it (about 4-5 years). Don't know where to look now. Any thoughts or ideas?:confused:

Update if anyone is interested. 0 compression on 4-5-6 cylinders and less than 60psi on cylinders 1-2-3. Guess I am pulling the front of the engine apart to check timing tensioner and guide.

Might be a good idea to do a little addl research, 4.0 has chain at rear of engine and you may have to pull the engine to get this straightened out..

Newest update... Got the valve covers off and have no valve movement. Took the timing cover off and I found the chain broken! There was a piece of thick sheet metal waded up and wedged between the cam gear and the chain. I'm sure that is what broke the chain but the Question is ...Where did the sheet metal come from? I can't figure it out. This IS the pushrod 4.0L and not the multi chain SOHC engine. This engine is supposed to have a windage tray in the oil pan but from what I can tell it sits more towards the back of the engine and not visible from what I can see in the front. Maybe a repair sleeve on the front of the crank? I just don't know. There is no damage to the cover or gears. The tensioner and guide are flat worn out but intact. I bought this thing well used and have driven it for about 5 years without any noises in the engine area. I think I can get by with a timing set and drive some more but I would like to know where the metal came from.... Any help or direction would be great. Thanks
