Check Engine Light on, 99 limited 5.0

My check engine light came on while driving to the Ford dealer to get the cruise contol recall part installed. Dealer wanted $100.00 to check it. Is there a cheaper way of having it diagnosed? Can I buy something to check it myself? Any suggestions. My system check on the center consul says nothing is wrong. Thanks.

Some of the aftermaket parts vendors can read codes, most will at no charge.. However, their dianostic/system capability is very limited...

First off, your message center will not tell you about the check engine lite. It monitors safety items. Yes, there are some parts houses that will read the codes for you for free, but stop right there. Bring the codes back here and let us advise you on what parts might need to be replaced. Parts houses do not employ technicians that can properly diagnois codes. Scanners can not tell you what part is defective. They deal in areas to be examined, and these areas can contain more than one part.
