Crankshaft pulley broke off 1997 Explorer

I bought a 1997 Explorer a little over a year ago with 83,000 miles on it and have had no problems with it except one day as I was driving home from work I heard a snapping sound and the vehicle immediately died. When I opened the hood, I found the crankshaft pulley hanging from the surpintine belt. When I had it towed to my mechanic, he said that he had never seen a Ford engine do that. The crankshaft had apparently sheared clean in half. It looked like someone had taken a saw to it and just cut in in half, cleanly and perfectly in half. The SUV has 115,000 miles on it now and I was wondering if anyone has had the same thing happen to them and what caused this? I got no warning at all before this happened.
