Ford Explorer 1995 XLT V6 4.0 Check Engine Light
 

Recently, I purchased a Ford Explorer with the check engine light on, however, it didn't seem to have any significant problems besides hesitation upon starting every once awhile, and a violent jerk after an hour on the highway. The problem persisted and became worse over the course of ownership so I decided to do some investigating myself to see if I could fix the problem. So now, every- time I take my Explorer on the road it will hesitate upon acceleration but eventually become a smooth ride. However, every time I go to accelerate the hesitation will persist but eventually die out. It becomes annoying when I am driving on the highway and I have to endure constant hesitation on the road.Sometimes it will even stall in low revs after prolonged usage, but start right back up. After doing some research across the internet, I disconnected my throttle position sensor and the truck ran smoother than it did before. So I replaced the T.P.S. and reconnected it to the truck. I still have the same problem, however, the hesitation isn't as bad as it was before. But it's still annoying. The truck runs a lot better without the T.P.S. but I can tell it runs under a lot more duress which will be problematic. I took the truck to Autozone for an OBD2 read and still no answers. Help.

No check engine light now? Was the battery disconnected when you replaced the TPS. Could be fuel delivery related as well. The prior code may have helped in a direction.

Check engine light still comes on even with new sensor. The battery wasn't disconnected. However, it has been drained and recharged recently due to my nightly fishing excursions.again, the problem was always there and at first I thought it might be the O2 sensor because I owned a jeep and it had the same symptoms with running rough upon restarting after driving the vehicle around with shut off and start. I've concluded that it might be a faulty computer or o2 sensors or mass airflow or the whole tps system. I wonder if it is a combination of both 02 sensors and faulty computer response with the tps. Even with the tps disconnected the truck can stall.I feel a hell of alot more comfortable with tps disconnected but I don't want to create further problems by keeping it disconnected.

None of the obd2 scanners I've tried can read my vehicle so I'm S.O.L. for understanding why the CEL is on unless I take it to firestone,but I am a broke college student so I am trying to put my education to use by figuring it out on my own.

Meaning, won't communicate, or power up the scan tool from the DLC?

It'll connect. The obd2 will recognize that its connected but after awhile of reading, it says error.

1995 Explorers are OBD1 you will have to count the flashes on engine fault area of dash for numbered fault codes

Considering the post is from 2016, she probably got rid of the vehicle by this time.
