gas cap

I have a 2002 Sport Trac that has check gas cap lite on. I replaced cap with new one from Ford and lite still on. Is there anything else I can check before I have to go to Ford and spend $160 for them to figure it out?

You will have to clear the code before the light will code out.

RE: gas cap

Actually, the gas cap lite is set because the system sees a failure in the evaporative emission system. The is a problem with the vapor recovery system, possibly a leak, and it is large enough that when the vehicle runs a test, it sees this large leak. Now is you have just replaced your cap, it will take two drive cylces for it to reset the light. Don't ask what a drive cylce is, but it might take you a week of driving to complete one. So, if your trying to avoid paying $160 to find out, drive it to see if the cap was the problem. I can't understand why a deal would charge you that much because a smoke test on the system should run you about $80. where I work.

Thanks guys. I disconnected battery and lite out now. I don't know why Ford wants $160 either. I think thats pretty steep. Thanks again.:)
