low idle @cold start

4.0 SOHC Idle runs 400 to 700 and wants to stall during first 1 - 2 minutes. Gas mileage is poor now maybe 12mpg. Have replaced IAC 8 months ago. Engine runs fine after 2 minutes with no loss of power. Sprayed carb cleaner around base of intake with no change. Someone suggested replacing coolant temperature sensor. I can see it but unable to get there.
Thanks

RE: low idle @cold start

I have the exact same symptoms with the same engine except with check engine light.

Im taking it in for a diagnostic check.

Ive heard o2 sensor or maf sensor but wont know for sure until I take it in.

FYI I changed the fuel filter with no results.

RE: low idle @cold start

Hi John, What year is your Explorer?

I had purchased a used 1998 that was doing what yours is, and when I went to the dealer, I learned there was a recall for the head gasket.
There was a heater switch, or something like that, I think, that was taken care of also.
But that switch was not the cold start up problem, the head gasket was.
And I did get a new spare tire because it was a firestone.

I had them replace every hose, belt, and clamp while they were in there replacing the head gasket.

I see there are a few posts around here, that sound like the same problem?

Peace Out
