Default NO 4X4, DELAY GOING IN REVERSE COLD

HELLO, I AM NEW HERE AND NEW EXPLORER OWNER.I HAVE A 96 EXPLORER 4.0L V6,WHEN I CLICK TO 4X4 BOTH THE 4 HI AND THE 4 LO LIGHTS JUST FLASH,WILL NOT ENGAUGE,THIS VEHICLE SAT FOR A LIL BIT,ALSO WHEN COLD REVERSE TAKES A BIT TO KICK IN ALL OTHER GEARS ARE GREAT. WHEN THE TRUCK WARMS UP REVERSE WORKS FINE,IF I TRY TO MOVE QUICK IN REVERSE WHEN COLD IT SLAMS IN REVERSE AND THE O/D LIGHT COMES ON.SHUT THE TRUCK OFF START BACK UPP NO LIGHT NO PROBLEMS.....ANY IDEAS WOULD BE HELPFUL,PREVIOUS OWNER SAYS REVERSE HAS BEEN LIKE THAT FOR AT LEAST 3 YRS. NOT GOTTEN ANY BETTER OR WORSE...PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK...THANKS

i had a bronco 2 that did the same thing when it came to reverse. and i ended up having od blow out twice. becareful and the other thing i really dont know about cause i have not really looked at an explorer very much.


also if you dont have any 4x4 wheel drive you might have to look at the 4x4 motor might be out otherwise i would look at the switch also maybe thats messed up.
