P0301 code

My wife got as check engine light today. She stopped at a local parts store and they pulled the code for her. It is P0301- cylinder misfire detected cylinder one. What would set that code? bad plug????
Thanks, Jay

Could be..

If it's a 4.6 it could be a COP coil on top of the plug going bad.. If a 4.0 it could be a wire going south or possibly the coil pack.. If a 4.6, replace the plug/s and move the #1 coil to a different cylinder position and then if the CEL sets again and follows the move the coil is bad.. With both engines it's possible it could be an injector issues, but most times it's ignition component related..

Thanks, Hayapower. The engine is the V6. I'm going to add that info to my signiture.
I just started the car and I can see arcing at the boot of number 1 cyc. I'll check it again after dark.( cloudy and raining right now) Would the arcing be caused by a bad wire or a bad plug????
Thanks, Jay

update

I went to the dealer and bought a set of OE wires. The problem seems to be fixed.
Thanks for the help, Jay
