Default Rear axel / diff/back end 1996 4WD 5Spd

Hi, I now have a 4dr 4wd 1996 Explorer and the back end is playing up. You can just about drive it but if you depress the clutch pedal the wheels lock up and the car stops. I have been told the rear diff is probably shot. My truck has a D4 axel (according to the info on the door) I was trying to find out which axel to put in. I dont want to mess with too much so was going to get a complete axel from the car wreckers. I found a number of D4 axel type cars but they were all Automatic cars none were standard shift. They had some 5Spd vehicle but none had a D4 axel. Does it matter if the axel comes from an auto?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Axle code D4 is a 3.73 Limited Slip axle. Doesn't matter what engine or tranny it has, a D4 is a D4. If getting one from a bone yard, get a clean one with as little miles as possible. also pop the cover off, clean the insides and add fresh gear lube (make sure it states for limited slip axles). Go with a synthetic. Also, make sure you use the ford friction modifier. Even though I ran AMSOIL in my 97 and 01 Explorer Sports L/S axles, I always added the friction modifier.

Thank You, I thought this was the case but I've never known a junkyard turn away business so was unsure.

Any time. Also, it just hit me. Since your buggy is like 11 years old the rear may be sagging, if the doner vehicle is newer, check on the possibility of getting the rear springs with the axle for a low/no cost.
