Sloppy shift lever......big problem?
Hi Folks!
I have a '98 Explorer Sport. The tranny was rebuilt two years ago. I noticed then that the shift lever had a little more "slop" in it, but thought it was no big deal.....barely noticed it. NOW, it has gotten so sloppy on the column, that I can't even get it into low-low gear. Is this gonna be costly to repair? This truck is still in show-room condition, but with 171,000 miles, it's future is in question. Thanks in advance for your replies! Frank |
Welcome to the site..
The first thing to check,,, Look under the steering column from the foot well area at the 'main body' of the steering column and you'll see where the steering shaft exits.. Just above in that area,, you'll see a angled lever and the trans shift selector cable attachment.. The selector lever attaches to the shifter tube with 2 torx screws that commonly come loose and back out causing excessive shift range hunt/slop.. Look there first and see if their the cause... |
