starter grinding

Hey guys i got a weird situation with my explorer. has any one ever had their car running and ya accidentally turn key thinking its not started yet or what ever and of course it grinds the heck out of the starter. Well thats pretty much what my explorer is doing, but on its own of course. the kicker is when i have my serpintine belt off the engine will start up and runs and sounds fine but when i put the belt back on ,everytime i start it , it starts up, butthe starter is staying engaged to the flywheel and grinding the crap out of it. I will be the first to admit Iam not very good at trouble shooting electrical stuff and wiring issues so if anyone can give me a idea of whats going on here id really appreciate the help. thanks in advance for any ideas
