Default Transponder Key

Hey everyone happy 4th of july weekend... my keys were stolen, i need to buy a new(used) ignition, since my car uses a transponder key, will the new key and ignition have to be "programmed" at a dealership before it will work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks all

slamiam,

If I remember correctly the new key must be reprogrammed by a trained Ford technician before it works properly on your Explorer. Don't quote me but I do believe that a solid independent Ford shop may be able to perform the transponder programming for you at a discounted labour charge. Conduct an extensive Google search for any local shops that may be able to assist you.

If you do end up taking the Explorer into the dealership for the job then I highly recommend sourcing your key/ignition from an outside source. There is a plethora of reputable Ford parts sites that offer the same OEM parts that your dealer sells but at a hefty discount. Ford Explorer Parts at FordPartsGiant - Genuine OEM Explorer Parts is one of them, I believe.

Good luck with the parts search!

go to the repair shop, they have tools like SBB key programmer in esobd2.com, which can copy your keys, don't worry, everything will be fine
