110k Miles Switch to 5w30?

Hello, I own a 2010 F150 XLT with the 5.4 Triton in it. It has 110,000 miles on it and it has the “tapping/clicking” noise. I saw that it is actually recommended to switch from 5w20 to 5w30 after about 100,000 miles. The thing is, I recently did an oil change and put 5w20 in it not knowing about this switch and there hasn’t been an oil change since I bought the truck at 105,000 miles and I don’t know what the previous owner had in it. Would it still be okay if I switched to 5w30 soon?

The 5w will still provide the benefit of a lighter oil on starting and the 30 will provide the benefit of a thicker oil at the operating temp.

You might notice the difference in viscosity when you pour the oils.

Use the recommended weight oil for your truck. Engines and motor oils changed radically in 2016 and a new SAE specification resulted. Engine manufacturers and motor oil companies changed their products to meet the new standard and spent many millions of dollars on research and development.

With pre 2016 engine there are oils rated for older engines. My 2022 truck's engine was designed for 5W-30 oil and yours probably should use fully synthetic 5W-20 oil. Our 2022 Toyota Rav4 engine uses 0W-16 full synthetic motor oil.

Somehow I believe the Toyota engines are manufactured to finer tolerances.

The majority of engine wear takes place when the engine is cold and that is when you want the oil up there ASAP.

In addition, direct fuel injection components operate under considerable pressure and stress, and require oil with the extra additives to handle those conditions.
