1977 Ford F-150 Ranger Help

Im not the most mechanically inclined person, I used to work on a 95 Dodge Ram 1500. I most recently purchased a 77 Ford Ranger with the 460 engine and have been trying to learn about Carburetor style engines.

Im looking to replace the stock Air Cleaner and box with an aftermarket air cleaner. I noticed when looking at the air box that there is a small hose that leads into the air box and on the inside attached to a small filter. When purchasing a new air filter do I need to get a kit that includes that small filter and hose as well? I've been looking at some edelbrock air cleaners without the box..

Like I said im new at carburetors and not the most mechanically inclined.. any suggestions you could give me, advice or help would be appreciated.

that is usually the pcv valve on the bottom of the air box near the middle of it there should be place that you knock out that lets you hook up the pcv valve

That small hose, and filter allows air to enter into the crankcase. It is part of the PCV system. Air is sucked out of the crankcase from the PCV valve from intake manifold vacuum, and air comes in at that breather inside the air filter. The other end of the breather hose is attached to a valve cover.

If you just disconnect the hose a film of oil will form on the engine. Aftermarket valve covers come with the breather, and filter, attached right on the valve cover.

This eliminates the hose. Thus, more choices in running an aftermarket air cleaner.
