Default 1978 Rear Differential

I wanted to change the fluid in my rear diff. Most of the info I found said to remove the cover plate on the back of it. Mine doesnt have a cover plate on back so I unbolted it in the front and removed the drive shaft. I can get the cover partially off but not all the way. Do I need to do something else to remove it?

Being its a 3rd member, the axles need to be pulled to allow the differential to move out. The lube could have been changed pumping/evacuating it out of the fill plug.

Well live and learn. When I checked the oil there are a lot of little specs of metal. What is to much?
