1985 f150 transmission help

I bought a 1985 f150 with inline 6 with 3 speed automatic transmission a few months ago. It sat for 3 years and I'm slowly getting back to good. At least trying to. Right now I'm getting roughly 12 mpg and would like to get more. I've found a few transmissions that are in my price range but not sure if they will bolt up. I'm not the most mechanically inclined person but have two brothers in law who are and they have been helping me learn a lot quickly. I'm open to any suggestions as to how to increase mpg. on a side note, since I got my truck I've been looking at these pages and have found a lot of good info. so thanks.

forgot to mention things I've done. Changed fluids, done tune up, timing is good. made sure vacuum lines are good. cleaned/rebuilt carb. engine runs good.

gear vendors unit give you an .50 to 1 overdrive and it rated at 2000 hp

those engines were the best 6 's ever built other than adding overdrive to it you might try putting a higher gear ratio in the pumpkin or rear end

I have a 1985 F150 6.9 L diesel that I'm trying to sell. It has a Dual Range auxiliary transmission that helps get better highway mileage. I just posted this truck for sale on this forum. I'm trying to get $1200 (It needs a transmission).
