1987 F150

Hey everyone,
I am new here... I recently bought a 1987 Ford F150 longbed with a 302 V8 engine with a 3 speed overdrive automatic transmission...

I am wondering how many bolts is it to take the bed of the truck off and how hard is it to get the bed off? I want to get the whole truck primed and everything but I want to do it the correct way by taking the bed off of it...

and also do you guys know of anything that could swell the seals in a truck transmission? it is leaking out of the front of the transmission and i was told it was the front seal but to fix that would be like 500 dollars :-/... Is there an alternative like maybe an additive I could use or anything? any help would be greatly appreciated....

Kris

Look in the bed you should see 6 I think large round circles like a tad smaller then a quater. ,, Those are your bed bolts !!!!!! , gotta get them loose from underneath. An they can be a bear . Also you gotta remove the lites an unplug them , take the fuel tank hoses off . I think theres one or 2 small ground straps too. you going to need about 4 strong friends, ( at the very min. ), I had as many as 6 sometimes . if you dont have access to a good over head lift.,,,, An as far as the Tranny if you wanta try it get a good name brand of ( mechanic in a bottle ).. there all about the same , they all claim there the best , just stay away from the cheap brand X type .,,,,, I dont know how good your Mechanic skills are . But the front seal is really pretty easy to replace, An adding a bottle of fix it , if it does stop the leak it will only fix it for a short time an it will go back to leaking again , so its only a temp. fix at best . Good luck

AS far as the tranny goes there are several things to cause one to leak out the front . Like does it leak when cold or after its been run awhile. If it only leaks when hot then possibility it is getting to hot and the radiator needs to be looked at because of the tranny cooler inside the radiator. If the water is low in the radiator and exposing the cooler trans will run hot or if the tibes inside the radiator arent flowing enough water over the cooler oh by the way this trans overheat condition will not show up on the water temp gauge. The seal its self could be just bad also or the hub on the torque convertor also could be worn.Dont know of any fix in a bottle but you can try.
