1995 F150 New engine or fix the old one?

I have a 1995 F150 5.8 V8 4x4 that I would like to essentially restore. My intent is to eventually have it as an extra truck that I have around. It would be cool to have my oldest son drive it in 6 years when he turns 16. I am at a spot where I am looking to spend close to $2000 on various engine/ transmission work. Do I get a crate engine or a refurnished engine or do I just do the repairs that are needed on the truck currently? I am leaning a certain way but I also don't do this all the time and thought I would see what others have to say. Its said that the wise seek counsel from others, so please let me hear the wise counsel.

a rebuilt engine will cost you 1600 from most parts suppliers plus the core and and all the other fixins to make it right. i put a new straight six in mine. i did the work my self and it still set me back 2400. but i feel it was worth it
