1997 4.2 lost oil pressure

My 97 4.2 powered F150 4X4 all of a sudden lost oil pressure. Within the past two weeks the "check engine" light came on and verified it was the cam shaft position sensor. I had changedsycnronizer and capout aprox two years ago for the same indication.
Does this sound like it could be the shaft for the camshaft sensor "shaft" or is the oil pump busted? Can this be changed out fairly easy without pulling the engine? Any help is greatly appreciated...
---Additional info---
I removed the camshaft sensor and found the syncronizer and oil pump drive shaft could be spun by hand. The syncronizer and oil pump drive shaft were then removed and found no problem with either, well other than slight wear on the oil pump drive shaft. Does anyone know of any issues with the sync drive gear stripping? I did not notice a hex drive portion through the center of this gear?

Thanks in advance

russ

RE: 1997 4.2 lost oil pressure

The oil pump on the 4.2 liter engine is located on the front cover and is accessable from externalrepair. You can remove the oil filter and adapter and the gears and housing can be inspected without much work.
