89F150 won't start
Hello all my problem started Suddenly. One day I drove it all.was fine the next day it would die when I put it in gear. Now it won't even start. I've changed the fuel filter cleaned the valve which I believe is the IAC. Checked the fuel pump ,vaccum and still no luck any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting any spark? Sounds like it may be an ignition module failure.
|
My ignition module checked OK. Replaced coil cap and rotor. Still no luck.
Any ideas? |
Do you have a working test lite?
|
Yes I have one
|
OK, with the test lite hooked to a good ground,
1. With the key turned on you should have 12 volts coming into the coil. 2. when cranking with the test lite on the other coil primary terminal you should get a pulsing light showing that the pick up coil in the dist is working to send a signal to the ign module to generate a spark through the coil. 3. remove one of the spark plug wires and if you have an old spark plug place the plug wire on it and lay the plug shell on a grounded portion of the engine. Then crank the engine and watch the plug for spark. You will either have spark or not. Depending on the result you get will determine your next step. If you didn't have the expected results in the first 2 steps let us know . OK ? |
OK so I couldn't find my test light but I found a multimeter. I have 12 volts with ign on but no change in value from the other side of connector when cranked.does this tell us anything? Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's a spark issue since it starts with Carb cleaner sprayed in the throttle body .any experts out there?
|
When you turn the key to the "on" position, do you hear the fuel pump priming? Did you check fuses for the fuel pump?
|
I can hear the pump. A long stream. Of fuel releases when the key is cranked and the valve on the engine is pressed (looks like the tire inflator valve)
|
I would like to believe that you have spark, but the only way to be sure is to check with the coil wire to the dist cap held a 1/4 inch from a ground while the engine is cranking.
Of course you don't want to be holding that wire in your bare hands while touching the sheet metal and cranking the engine since if you did have spark it could lite up your life momentarily. Let us know if you see the spark. Also can you see the rotor move when you crank the engine with the dist cap off? You can check for that spark with an easy to remove plug wire or the coil wire . with a plug wire it would tell you the rotor is moving. The pin that holds the gear to the dist shaft will sometimes shear and the rotor doesn't move and that would cause the pick up coil in the dist not to do its job. As you can see it's important to actually see that spark as, way 2 old questioned in a previous post. |
Agreed. Try that. Also, have you checked the condition of your spark plugs?
Check to make sure the fuse that your fule injectors are on is still good. |
Checked fuel pump relay .found OK can anyone help locate fuel injector relay?
|
If you can not solve it then go to an expert. It will be better.
|
There is an EEC relay that powers the (ECA) in this case.
You are jumping around hoping to hit the problem with the shotgun approach and that isn't the better way to isolate the problem. You must confirm that you have spark. Then after that you can leave the ignition system alone and go after the fuel system if the ign system is good and functioning. |
