'99 F-150XLT Temperature control knob breaking

Hi all,
The temperature control knob keeps breaking. I have replaced it 2 times with knobs I got at a junk yard (I did check for them being cracked and they were not before buying them). The last time I bought one I talked to one of the junk yard employees and he recommended spraying a little WD40 into the end of the cable that attaches to the panel. I can't really say that I noticed any benefit and since the new knob broke w/in 6 months I'm thinking that the cable might be the problem. Any advice on what to do and any help on how to replace the cable would be helpful if that's required. I don't really like to start pulling things apart without a good idea of what I'm doing (I've had enough of that type of "learning" in the past).

Thanks.
