air injection pipe

k here goes. I bought this 85 ford f150 with the 5.8w engine it had a exhaust leak witch i later found was coming from the backfire valve or the (air check valve). So i tried to fix it and get it to unscrew welll corse it was to old and the pipe was to old so it had holes all in it how hard is this to change and once changed can u close this off i don't wanna have to put the smog pump back on just for that! but main thing i need to know is how do u change this do u have to drop the engine *was told* or what looks like i may have to take the headers at least somewhat off. Any help with this would be muchly appreciated!
