Air intake and High Performance exhaust

Gents, I have a question about the best and most cost efficient option for a good air intake that will survive being splashed with water without stalling the engine, but will still allow a racing type airflow into the engine. Likewise for the exhaust. Is it better and legal to have a cat-back system rather than coming from the exhaust manifold to get good airflow from the engine, or can a cat-back system still have decent airflow and produce that V8 sound we all love. The flowmaster 40 series, I'm told, will produce a loud rumble, just enough to hear the engine in idle. My Harley is pleasantly obnoxious, I want the same for my truck. Comments are welcome. Tell me what you think.

For the air intake, I would just go with a K&N airfilter. They are about $50, but work pretty well and flow air great. That way you'll get good air intake without having to alter anything.

For the exhaust, new mufflers like the Flow Masters will help flow, but another thing to look into are high flow catalytic converters. You can find them on the Summit website.

I have the K&N filter already installed, but it's the factory cone that goes around the filter is what I'm worried about.
High performance cat's?. I didn't think they existed. I'll look into it.

What are you trying to do that you need something special other than a K&N for the aor intake? Off roading?
