Where you moving to? Block heaters are not needed in most parts of the country. For example in PA you would be fine with out it although Chicago, i would get one.

ther are a few types that you can choose from the simple ones slide into the dipstick, others are a silicone rubber hear that is 120V, there is a large heater that mounts to the oil pand and usualy two others that mount to the side of the block. they have a 120V cord and usualy come with a large 3 outlet extention cord. check out jc whitney, summit, jegs hope this helps. Good luck in Alaska

You could look for and order online from places like Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, Napa, etc. that are all over the place. They should have them.

Any thing that will keep the oil from freezing/thickening will do the trick.

My wife had a car that would get hard to start in the winter (we can get down to -25 at times here) and I used two magnetic small engine block heaters on her car's oil pan. The car started right up.

If you plan on moving in the fall, when you get up there you will be able to go to an auto service center to get one installed. It's a pretty common thing for people to do in the fall in the colder states.
