F150 Hard Shift

Not real sure which tranny I have but just recently I took my 95 F150 with 59,000 miles on it from Orlando Florida to South Carolina. After being on the road for about an hour it began to shift hard between gears. I do not have cruise control, but it has the hi/lo button on the shift lever. I began noticing the hard shift whenever I had to go into and out of passing gear. Then again whenever I stopped at a light and it up-shifted. If it were a non computerised transmission, I would suspect the modulator valve. When I put my code reader on, there are no indications. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Good chance that you have the 4R70W EAOD transmission, but that’s just a guess off the top of my head without knowing the Trans code off the pillar on the driver’s side near the latch. First some questions. Does your overdrive light flash any or stay lit all the time? When was the last time you had the oil change, and did they use the latest fluid that Ford has recommended? There has been a change in the fluid they have been using. If you have not felt any hard shudder you may not have any real issue with the bands, or clutch packs. But the best thing to do is go get code checks ran on it and see what they come up with. And when you take it to get it fixed be sure to have the speed sensor in the rear axel check for proper operation. If the speed pickup sensor is report inaccurately then it can cause pre-mature transmission failure due to the wrong information being sent to the computer. The rebuild cost can run anywhere from $1600 to $2500 and if you do have to go that route I would insist that they go through or replace the valve body.

Flare.. Thanks for your help. The tranny is a Model PRA-DB, Serial # 00005475 and by my Ford book it turns out to be a E40D. I have no trouble codes, nor does the light flicker or stay on. I seldom run it out of OD. Also according to my book, the date codes are August 22, 1994 as the build date of the tranny. The filter and fluid were changed about five years ago by Ford. I hope that a filter and oil change will do the trick. Carl
