Need Help Fast
 

Tried to start my truck today and as usual it didnt start the first time. But usually i just let go of the key after the first try and then turn it again for the second try, when i touched the key i heard the starter engage again for a second the truck acted like it was going to start without me turning the key, then it died and white smoke came pouring from underneath the hood, and I mean POURING. I looked under the hood and it was coming out of my carb. I have no clue what this is but it did it to me three times today. Ive had this happen to me once before but never this much in one day. I finally am able to get it started when i just hold the key to start it and over rev the engine, but that worries me since its so cold out this time of year. The truck runs fine after it starts, the cab just stinks from the smoke. Does anyone know what this is or how to fix it. I need help ASAP!


Its a 79 Ford F150 351m with a 2 barrel carb, and I do know the carb needs a rebuild.

Because the carb may need some attention is no reason for it to backfire thru the intake . You may have an ignition system problem like a plug that is firing when a cylinder is on the intake stroke. Suggest you try to separate the plug wires as much as possible so as not to induce a voltage in the wire next to the one that is supposed to be firing. There is a special routing for the wires to correct this type problem. Many times when replacing plug wires good intentions of doing a neat looking job place the wrong wires next to one another. I seem to remember one of the problems involved cyls 7 & 8. Get them separated if they are running along side one another.

If you check the firing order for your engine any two cyls next to one another in the firing order have to have the plug wires separated so they can't run next to one another.
Make sure the dist cap is dry inside, and from what you describe it would seem the engine might be getting flooded after being parked.
