Thumbs up Please remind me what I need to do---Overheating 1997 f-150

Good day to you all. I am asking for your assistance in solving an overheating problem on a 4.2litre six cylinder in my 1997 F-150 with 520,000 miles. It is not the radiator--replaced within the year. I am thinking it's a sticking thermostat as the vehicle has been sitting in the drive way for a bit. Would you please remind me what test I can do to tell whether-or-not the water pump is functioning. From what I remember I put water in, close the system, pressurize, and then grab ahold of the water line out, and, there should be resistance thus indicating that the water pump is functioning.

Am I right on that?

With regard to the thermostat--------how do I test that?

got any other ideas?

APPRECIATE ANY AND ALL INPUT!!!!!
