Re-wiring a light.
 

We bought a cap about a year ago and when they installed it, they wired the light inside the cap to the marker lights. The light inside the cap has it's own switch, but I have to turn the marker lights on in order to supply power.

I would really like to wire the light directly to the battery or piggy-back a circuit that's directly connected to the battery.

Any advice on how do do so is greatly appreciated.

What year is your 150?

If it's a newer model a direct circuit to the battery or CJB would eliminate the battery saver relay from disconnecting the power if the light needs to be left on for an extended time/use..

Sorry, I failed the first rule of posting... Give all the required info. It's a 99.

I'm not mechanically savvy, but how long will the battery saver relay keep the light on and when or how does it reset itself? Is there an area in the cab or under the hood where all electrical connections are made?

THERE IS A FUSE RELAY BOX UNDER THE HOOD U MIGHT PICK UP A LIVE CIRCUIT THERE BUT I WOULD MAKE SURE IT IS A FUSED CIRCUIT I WOULD ADD AN IN LINE FUSE AT THE POINT WHERE I SPLICED IN JUST TO PROTECT ANY OTHER CIRCUITS

MINE IS A 1994 AND THEY TIED MINE IN AT THE LEFT REAR TAIL LIGHT I'M GUESSING THAT IS WHERE YOURS IS TIED IN

Another option...

Your truck will have a 'trailer/towbattery charge ' circuit running to the back for the trailer connector.. An 'Orange' wire in the harness group for the trailer connector.. It's 12v powered only when the key is in the run position 'normally'.. If you don't tow a trailer and don't utilize or need the battery charge function for a trailer, you can pull/remove the 'trailer tow battery charge relay' and bridge 2 of the connections there. Once removed/bridged it will supply a constant 12v to the orange wire running to the back of the truck.. Then, simply move the current lighting wire connection over to the orange wire at the frame rail, or if mid frame connection was made just a simple wire color change.. It's already overload protected to 30amp's..

Then if you decide or need to use the battery charge function for trailering, just remove the bridge wire and install the relay again..

I need to take a closer look at where and/or how they tied the power in initially. I can probably get to it in a week or two. I guess there's so many options that it'll be interesting to see exactly what they did.
