Rear Axles

2014 Ford F 150

Driving truck and suddenly got a grinding sound and now in the location of the right rear tire is now a howling sound.
Brakes and fluid levels are good.
Any idea of what could be the problem?
Thanks

If the noise is specifically coming from the axle end its most likely the axle bearing, if the noise is that loud the axle may also be toast. If its coming from the differential you will need to remove the diff cover and inspect it.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. If the wheel/axle bearing is bad, you likely will have to replace the axle since it serves as the race for the bearing.Wheel bearing noise will not change pitch between accerating and coasting as a pinion bearing/ gear noise would.Don't rule out tire noise.I would have a qualified shop look at it. To change the wheel bearing, you would need a press and there are many ways to mess up a differential changing a pinion bearing if done incorrectly.

You don't need a press for the axle bearing, just a slide hammer and bearing installer tool.
