'01 F-250 7.3L Starter Problems

Turning the ignition to start the truck, the starter just spins. Starter was replaced and that seemed to take care of the problem for a couple of days. Now it's doing the same thing.
Mechanic says it appears to be a "bad spot" on the flywheel that is causing the problem.
This doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone help?

Thanks in Advance,

SH

Welcome to the site..

What did the drive gear look like on the old starter removed? (or if they said) Generally when a ring gear goes south, the starter drive gear will get chewed up from the poor contact. Or, if the starters front bushing or housing fails it may damage the ring gear as well.. Does the starter engage with a 'clunk' and then spin? or just more of a starter motor spin sound? Anytime a customer complains of intermittent crank with a spinning starter, the flywheel ring gear should be checked by removing the inspection cover, or through the removed starter hole and the engine rotated 360 for a tooth inspection.. More so if the old starter showed signs of damage..
