86 f-250 locking hubs

I need to replace the brake disc on the drivers side and the u-joints on both sides. I did manage to remove the cover on the lockout hub! Now I can't see how to remove the innards. Do I need to find a snap ring on the axle or in the hub? I didn't see any when I looked. How does this come apart?? Many thanks!! Mike

RE: 86 f-250 locking hubs

You should find a snapring on the end of the axle itself, take that off. Theres also one screw holding the inner gear into the outer one then theres a spiral ring on the hub itself just take a small screwdriver and work it around. It comes apart pretty easily the hard part will be getting your spindle apart from the knuckle. I used a large chisel and hammered it in between the spindle and the knuckle. Took about an hour per side of hammering to get it off caues it was rusted in there good. I used lots of antisieze when i put it back together, so hopefully I wont have that problem next time.
