94 f250 4x4 with 5.8 just died

please help. my 94 ford f250 4x4 with the 5.8 just shut off. i was at the gas station filled up the truck it started then just died. engine will spin but wont crank. i did get a burnt electrical smell and a small amount of smoke from the dash. no power to either fuel pump, inertia switch, etc. tried switching relays but still nothing. everything in dash still operates fine. has anyone else had a similar problem? if so please direct me in a direction. think it might have got the ignition module too,but not sure yet. really need my truck.all fuses in panel checked and are not blown. i am out of ideas.

Do you know how to use the diagnostic plug to send power to the fuel pump?

redranger94 11-21-2010 07:06 PM

No but i did pull a jumper to the inertia switch and the fuel pumps powered up. When whatever did what it did it got the ignition module too. i replaced it with no luck.

hanky 11-22-2010 03:56 PM

Did you check all the fuses? Any under the hood? After jumping the inertia switch did the vehicle start?

redranger94 11-23-2010 06:47 PM

i checked all fuses underhood and underdash. None where bad. Also swaped relays. no it didnt start but the fuel pumps did come on. replaced bad ignition module and still will spin but wont start. starting to think the ecm is fried.

Do you know if you have spark available to the plugs?

Alonso30 11-25-2010 04:22 AM

try to get anotehr ECM ;this could be your problem

redranger94 11-25-2010 09:50 PM

I am not sure if the plugs are firing. Trying to do it bymyself in the dark is not working out so well for me. Another Ecm thats what i was afraid of.

hanky 11-26-2010 10:41 AM

What are you saying by , "another Ecm" ? Did you have to replace it recently?

redranger94 11-27-2010 03:31 PM

No I havent. I have tried to find a ecm just not having any luck. F series trucks with a 5.8 and an automatic are not easy to find around here. Also I was not looking forward to replacing it.

hanky 11-27-2010 04:27 PM

Does your engine have a distributor or is it using a crank sensor to send the signal to the ECM ?
Have you found what the cause for the burned smell was?
Something to consider, before you replace the ECM if that is what you are planning, try to determine where the burned smell came from and before the replacement ECM is installed we usually try to remove the cause for the failure unless it is in the ECM itself.

if your are looking for certian parts for that motor checkout lmc truck for the part you may be looking for should be there I also have the same motor and have ran into similar issue with the safety neutira switch which is located on the driver side of the truck that may also be a issue

If you haven't got it going yet be sure when you filled it at the gas station you didn't accidently get Deisel fuel. I know the pump nozzle should be to big for the filler hole but there are some small ones out there, and believe me it does happen and give the symptons you describe.

f250 4X4 just died

Mine did the same thing and it was the fuel cut off switch that burned up. The ford dealer said the ground got loose somehow and caused the switch arcing to burn the connections up. They replaced it and it worked just fine.
