brake lights don't work

Default brake lights don't work
I have an f-250 HD. I press the brake pedal and the lights don't turn on. I checked all fuses and they are all good. I pull a utility trailer and the lights don't work on it either. Before this started, I saw light smoke trickling out of the center of the column. help... PLEASE!!!
