F-350 Left rear brake part

My 1999 F-350 has a curved "shield" that is bolted to the inside of the caliper. The right side does not have the curved shield, nor does it have the added mounting hardware.
The shield is in the shape of a break shoe and is quite substantial. It appears to be original to the vehicle.
Thank you.
Eric

OK thank you. What is it for and why is it only on the left side?

Eric

If you look at the parking brake mechanism , I believe the cable assy comes in from the front part of the of the backing plate and the pass side comes in from the rear. It probably is there to protect the cable and mechanism. If there is another reason I'm not aware of it.

Hanky, OK let me check that out.
Thank you!

Well I think I have solves the mystery. The brake caliper on the left rear wheel is forward of the axle. The metal curved plate is a caliper protector to keep mud and or other damaging object out of the mechanism. The right real caliper is aft of the axle and thus has more protection already present. Well that-s my story and I'm sticking to it. What say ye?

Eric
