F250 Superduty, can I use inline fuel pump?
 

I am considering the purchase of a 1999 F250 but, the current owner said it needs a fuel pump. He is telling me that I can hear it run by him sprayins some starter fluid in while I start it. I know this is not good to do so I was wondering if I can just put an inline fuel pump under the hood and if it will supply the needed pressure?

The OEM pump puts out about 50-55 PSI. An added inline pump of equal volume/pressure output would or should work, but it would be much more simple to just install a new pump. Given the fab work to install a temp pump. The fuel system is a 'return to tank' system and the pump and fuel pressure regulator maintain the fuel needed for both pressure and volume to the cylinder head galleries. If you don't have an adequate pump, the engine will starve for fuel.. They don't like aerated fuel either.

Also, these trucks have a set of micro filters installed in the fuel tank module housing (not the large screen) and they tend to become restricted and/or plug up. Something to consider before condemning the pump. More so a check point if the original pump runs.

Spraying or adding fumes from a gas soaked rag ect. to the intake can be a bit explosive with the glow system active,, safer if you disconnect the glow plug relay next to the fuel/water seperator..
