How do i remove the calipers when there are no bolts securing them?
 

1993 Ford F-250 5.8L 2W Drive. There are no bolts attaching the calipers to the steering knuckles like the web pages and manuals I've read describe. They slide onto the steering knuckle and some kind of stainless one or two piece gizmos slide into a tunnel which is formed at the top and bottom slide (attaching) points when the caliper is mated to the steering knuckle. Do I have to drive out those two stainless gizmos and then the calipers will slide off? Do I need special tools for this job?:confused:

Yes ! You can drive them out with a punch. A couple of reminders, don't allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose use a piece of wire to hold the caliper up out of the way, those retaining pins should be replaced anytime you remove the caliper,make sure you clean the built up rust from the spindle and from the caliper where the pins slide into place. You will find it easier to install the lower pin first then install the upper pin.If you are going to lubricate the pins go easy on the lube.

Thanks, Hanky. A friend came by and we did as you suggested...placed the caliper on top of the axle & steadied it with mechanic's wire...cleaned away the loose rust. And I'll bike over to return the unused bearings and races and buy four new pins with the money I saved. FoMoCo suggests inspecting the bearings at 60,000 mi. and that's all this 1993 model has. The bearings and races look brand new.:)

Hey I have a 93 Ford Ranger with the same style calipers. I'm about to remove them today but I'm not sure what the pins are called in order to replace them. Where did you go to get new ones and what is the actual name for the pins?

When guys couldn't get them out or in they were called many names, but if you asked for caliper retainers any auto store would know what you want. Just make sure you give the year make model etc., and they should be able to get you what you need.
