Need help with F350

to all our fine ford friends:

i have a f350 04' 60.0 diesel that my son in law and myself our taking out the motor due to a bad head job from a mechanic i thought i could trust, anyways....we are at the point of removal and the oil pan won't come up quite far enough and the tranny is seperated but not totally disconnected. Has anyone been here and if so any words of wisdom sure would be appreciated!

thanks,
stephen t.

I've been there; it stinks, but a little direction helps a LOT! The turbo has to be removed; then, attached the eng. lift to the engine with a chain, going diagonally from the LF of the engine (the rear of the head has bolt holes that work great) to the RF head. Make the chain very tight to the block, attach the lift, and lift the eng. up to the cowl (this assumes it's ready to give birth). Then, remove the oil pan and pickup tube. It'll come right out. And this also works great during reinstallation; it has the benefit of NOT having to remove the trans, and it's not that much extra work. Also, during reinstallation, you can get to the engine mounts fairly easily.
If this is going to be a teardown and rebuild, don't even think about putting the rear crank seal in without the installer (could you possibly borrow one or rent one?), or it's a guaranteed leak.
