Running Rich

Hey everyone.
I just got a 1978 Ford F250 and have been having some issues with it.
After replacing fuel pump and having timing adjusted the cat started to smoke one day and when I looked at it, it was cherry red.
I replaced all plugs, boots and coil, but it still is getting hot. You can smell gas when I start the truck up so I know that its running rich, would this be the fuel sensor?
The air filter is one of the old oil systems which I have not yet replaced, but I feel it would be more of an fuel issues.
Any ideas?

You probably have a carburetor that is allowing extra fuel into the engine.
Among the causes could be , hi float level, heavy leaking float, excessive fuel pump pressure, leaking power valve in carb, restricted air filter, timing set incorrectly and a few more things that I didn't remember. I'm sure the fellow participants on this site will list some of the things I overlooked.

run a test on the fuel pump ! it probably has the mechanical fuel pump and it might be putting out too much pressure and pushing past the needle valve in the carburetor and flooding it out or the needle valve has dirt in it and not letting it seat and gas keeps pouring into the combustion chamber !
