Seals on front axle?

Hi all;
I have a 2006 F-350 4x4 6.0 Diesel. The other day I was rotating my tires and I noticed the seals on my front axles, right next to the u-joint that connects to the brake rotors, the seals were just just floating around the axle and just spinning around. I do plan on taking this to my dealer to have it repaired, hopefully the warranty covers this, but what sort of damage should I be concerned with. I don't know how long it's been like this, but judging by the condition of the seals, it's been like this for some time. There has obviously been water and road grime which has entered the housing/tube that these seals are supposed to seal off. When I take it in for repair, should I be requesting they look at other parts of the axle for wear or damage? Is this common, and how concerned should I be?

Thanks for any info.

I have had to replace both sides on my 4X4 already and expect they will come out again soon. They are there for a reason , so I keep replacing them, sorry, another one of Fords better ideas.

Thanks for the response, how much work is involved when replacing these seals? I looks labor intensive.

They are a pain in the neck to do, but not bad if you have the right tools.
