Timing for 79 F-250
 

I just replaced the 460 in my 79 F-250 and it's running hot. I timed it at 14 degrees. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and any other guesses why it might be running hot? New water pump, hoses, belts, etc. Radiator worked fine with old engine. Thanks! :eek:

how about the thermostat and is radiator for big block and is timing 14 degrees btc

I have a new thermostat in it but am not sure what temperature it is. The radiator is a huge radiator for a big block. It is a trailer special truck so everything is pretty heavy duty. Yes, the timing is at 14 BTC. Just spoke to my brother & he said I may need a thermostat with a lower temperature. Will hook up a 'real' gauge to it to see what temp. it is running rather than relying on the C - H stock temperature gauge. Thanks for your help.

did you use the temperature sender from your old motor or the that was already stuck in the new motor

I used the temperature sender from the old engine in the new motor. The old engine only had 66,000 miles on it when it broke a rod while traveling the interstate. No explanation for the rod failure as all was well with oil pressure, water, etc.
This is a completely new motor from Ford Motor Co.

So this was a FOMOCO long block, water pump?

Does it take some extended driving to get it to go hot, or does it start to run hot directly after a short warming/idle ect. Might try and pull the T/stat and run it to see if it still goes hot.. Being that nothing much has changed other than the block/pump and the engine build, sounds like possible circulation problem if the indicated temp is correct.. You checked the rad core condition? You should be able to see down into the rad, or drain it down enough to have a look at the bar openings for blockage and deposit collection./restriction if you haven't already.. But being you had no heat problems with the old engine, chances are it reasonably clean, but should be checked..How high on the gauge does it register? You might want to use a radiator thermometer and check for a running temp there...
