the plug should be mounted on the driver's side close to the hood hinge on the fender I'm not sure the trannies are the same or not

The EEC test connector is under the hood, in the LR corner of the engine compartment, mounted to the fender by a plastic cover (if original). If it's been tested a few times before (it usualy has by now), then it's laying down on top of the wiring harness, near the Ignition control module.
The trannies should be all the same; the bolt patterns were. But keep in mind, some of the 4 speeds had a 'granny gear' which was geared super high, and isn't very useful when not trying to pull over a house.

One other thing; the EEC test connector has 6 slots, looks like a trapezoid, and has an extra pigtail (which is self test input) that must be connected to the tester to start the test. The code format is demand-seperator code-continuous codes. For example, a 111-10-172 means the on demand part passed (the 111), then the sep. code (the 10), then the 172 means that at some time in the past, the O2 was stuck lean, when it should have switched for at least 15 seconds.
