06 500 leaking oil
I have a 2006 500 with 100k and a CVT. I just noticed it leaking oil from underneath around the front driver side tire. It doesnt seem like engine oil but since I cant check the fluid on the CVT I dont know what it is. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Not familiar with this part, I know it's for the steering. Anybody help me please?

You are correct. It looks like the leak is coming out of the rack and pinion boot. Usually in this case the best fix is to replace the entire rack and pinion unit,

Anybody have any experience with replacing a rack and pinion. Is it something a guy could do in his garage?
|
I'm not saying you can't do it, but it involves some special equip most people don't have. Best if done by experienced shop.

In the future, to I.D. fluids, try this.
Get down there, give her a clean up wipe. In a few days if it is still wet, get a finger full of the lube and taste it. No don't swallow it. spit it out. It will tell you straight on if it is engine oil or CVT or power steering fluid, grease, steering knuckle? Test, test, test, taste taste, taste. Honest. This is not Rocket Science. Yep, from your picture [BTW, how did you post a pic?] it looks like it is coming out of the rack. Are you loosing power steering fluid from the reservoir feeding the pump? Every year I suck out all brake fluid and hydraulic fluids with a Turkey Baster on my Expedition best I can and refill with fresh fluid. I don't know why, I just do...I'm thinking it's keeping the fluids sweet and clean and water free. Plus it gets me to looking around and maybe spot trouble early on. 'You'll see it before it breaks'. skip. |
