Lightbulb Flickering console lights/headlights w/ new alternator.

Hello,

I have noticed that the console lights on my car faintly, and I mean faintly, flicker. The headlights and instrument gauge do this as well (I have replaced the OEM headlights with LEDs when the original halogens crapped out), but it is nearly imperceptible even when you are looking for it. It does not seem to follow a pattern which makes me think random voltage drops. The alternator is new, replaced maybe about a month and a half ago. Would this just signify old Halogen bulbs that should be replaced or are they indicative of something else? I am not worried about it, simply curious.

2007 Ford Five Hundred SEL ~150,000 miles.

I don't know how you can test for instantaneous fluctuations in alternator output voltage. I've a 2006 AWD with 213,000 that I've owned for less than 2 months, and haven't noticed anything comparable (yet).

I would also say that the battery is supposed to steady the voltage supplied to lights, but on an older Nissan, I note that the headlights dim when I come to a stop sign and apply the brakes, even though the battery is new.

Hmm, yeah definitely weird but I'm doing a Big 3 upgrade pretty soon so i'll try and see if the dimming gets worse.

RaiderBoy, I am looking at the owner reviews on Edmunds.com in order to find problems for this new-to-me car - and found this review comment relevant to your issue. It's from a Dec 14, 2006 review post.

" After 6,000 miles I am very satisfied with my Ford Five Hundred. I have a fully loaded AWD Limited. The amount of options and features available for the price is an excellent value. I purchased this vehicle when gas prices were at their peak in hopes to achieve better MPG than my F-150. I am very satisfied with the MPG I am getting (about 19/20 city). I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who is in the market for a sedan. I have an issue with the electronics in the instrument panel and interior lighting that causes the lights to dim and flicker periodically. I am not sure if this is a widespread problem or if I have a faulty component."
