grinding front end noise while braking

2007 SEL AWD, 126k miles grinding noise while braking, brakes were low replaced new pads and rotors, still making a grinding noise checked pads rotors nothing hitting nothing loose, noise sounds like worn out brakes disc grinding help please anyone?

hanky 05-06-2018 01:34 AM

Need to know,
Which pads /rotors were replaced,
Front, rears or both.

drive805 05-06-2018 03:30 AM

replacement

front pads and rotors , rear pads only

hanky 05-06-2018 07:51 AM

Consider trying this;
Only need a few feet to do this, Start the vehicle moving and only apply the parking brake to stop the vehicle.
If you do not hear the grinding the problem is definitely coming from the front
If, however, you hear that grinding noise while only using the parking brake, now you have isolated the problem to the rears.
If you purchased all the pads from the same place and you hear the grinding from both front and rear, the pads could be the problem.
Let us know what you find, thanks.

no noise

tried stopping with e-brake, got no noise, but then drove around the block and got no front end noise either.
neighbor saw me and asked what i was doing , i told him he suggested front hub replacement does that sound right?

hanky 05-06-2018 03:19 PM

Usually it there is a front hub involved you will get some unusual noises when turning because that is when some strain is placed in the hub. Can you determine if the noise is louder on one side than the other?

drive805 05-06-2018 05:55 PM

the noise is louder on the left, was told it sounds like its coming from past the brakes, my brother helped me out with that, its makes some noise turning left while applying brakes but no noise off the brakes, thinking about replacing the hub. But would rather have a better idea before i did

drive805 05-12-2018 12:54 PM

checked again, changed front hub... still making making the same noise

hanky 05-12-2018 01:36 PM

Trying to diagnose over the net can be futile without actually being there to hear the noise.
When you had the caliper, pads, rotor, and hub off did you notice anything unusual with the CV joint(s) ?
Curious why there was no noise after you applied only parking brake.

drive805 05-12-2018 03:34 PM

its very frustrating for sure , i thought maybe someone had the same issue and would steer me in a good direction. wife has the car now when she is back ill take it for a drive and record the noise.

wouldn't load try youtube ford five hundred brake grind ... please

hanky 05-12-2018 06:52 PM

Before going any further, can we get some more info?

Was te grinding noise you hear the reason you got into doing the brake work?

drive805 05-12-2018 07:22 PM

couldn't load video go to youtube ford five hundred brake grind

drive805 05-12-2018 07:28 PM

yes, heard the noise , checked brakes they were real low. but not metal to metal with over 100k on car i replaced with new rotors and pads and replaced the rear pads also they were still good but replaced anyways,, after about 100 miles on new brakes noise started again, thought it could be bearings so replaced hub, still making noise

drive805 05-12-2018 07:36 PM

in the video the noise can be heard at about :13 and again about 1:05

drive805 05-12-2018 07:43 PM

i did another video but you couldnt hear it over my voice that was the only clip where you can hear it the best

hanky 05-12-2018 07:55 PM

There are a few more checks you might try.
1. Place the trans in neutral just before stepping on the brake pedal, is the grinding still present?

2.If you are positive the grinding is coming from the L/F , try switching the 2 front wheels to eliminate a possible rim/wheel problem.

3. Are you sure the engine is not moving when the brake is applied suspension/engine mounts.

hanky 05-13-2018 06:19 AM

What was the result of shifting into neutral before applying the brakes?
Grinding still present , yes-no?

drive805 05-13-2018 01:34 PM

no noise in neutral coasting down a hill, i changed side to side rotors and pads still making noise on left front..... engine isn't moving, replaced motor mounts a year ago still in good shape

drive805 05-13-2018 01:38 PM

only time i hear noise is when brakes are applied

hanky 05-13-2018 03:42 PM

The reason I suggested placing the trans in neutral then applying the brakes was to help isolate the noise possibly to a drive train problem that showed up when the brakes were applied. Can you do that?

Did you swap the wheels to see if the noise moved?

drive805 05-13-2018 05:52 PM

i did not swap wheels , i will do that this evening and let you know, i checked axles again on the ground not jacked up and inner axle has some movement , but isnt that normal? i will swap tires and go coast down the long hill again see if the noise moves to passenger side !

hanky 05-14-2018 02:45 PM

There should be no movement of the parts except turning.

Coast will not be the same as applying the brakes immediately after taking it out of gear.
