2015 purge valve issues
2015 Focus SE sedan with 50318k. My son is in Daytona Beach attending Embry-Riddle (i'm in north east TN) and he calls me saying his car has quit on him. It starts back and he goes another 10 miles and quits again. He has it towed to the dealer and they check it out telling him that the fuel vapor purge valve was stuck open and since my son chose to ignore the check engine light, it sucked in the fuel tank and damaged the fuel pump (since this car has no fuel cap, i'm not sure how that is possible). They tell me that the purge valve is not an emmision part and and would not be a warranty issue. New tank, new pump, new vapor canister, new purge valve plus they changed the oil and put in a new battery. grand total of $2400. Thats 1/4 of what we paid for the car.
Any of you fine folks ever hear such a thing? Thanks

There may be more to this than what is presented. There is a vent valve that is supposed to open when purging so vapors can get sucked into the engine to get burned and that should prevent the tank from collapsing. I would suggest that you do some research on the evap system and confront the dealership once you understand how the system works and what it does. Check with another dealer or two to get a better idea of how long what they cover as emission items and times/mileage.
