1995 for thunderbird dash questions

My goal for the day was to convert my single din radio to a double din radio. What I did first was obviously remove the dash, including ac control panel. The only way in a 1995 ford thunderbird to convert it to a double din it to us the top 2 dins. Doing this you have to move the ac control panel all the way down to the bottom storage slot. With a little bit of shaving an wire stretching it slides right in. So I did all that, then I cut all the plastics beams that were stopping it from sliding in. After allll that I went to put the radio in, and come to find out there was a metal beam stopping it from sliding it all the way in. The beam is about 1" wide, and it pretty thin, but very solid. It doesn't look like it is holding anything up. My question is would it hurt to remove that beam? It is right behind where a standard radio would sit. Any suggestions?

Sorry about the horrible quality of the pics. But here's the beam
