07 freestar coolant leak

today my 07 freestar with a 4.2 started leaking coolant. cant see it from the top but when you look under it is leaking down the pass side frame rail. it is a very large leak. does anyone know where it could be comming from? are there hosed down the pass side on the back of the engine?

thanks,
todd

This is what one would call a blind guess.
Is the coolant recovery bottle mounted on that side?

yes it is..

It would appear that the recovery bottle itself may have developed a leak since you are not experiencing any overheating problems.

i found the leak. there are 2 hoses metel and rubber that run under the botor by the pullly and go up around the back of the engine. the metal lines were corroded thru. the van is only 4 1/2 years old and 64k miles this i think ford should cover

From your description it sounds like they are heater hoses. You could ask your dealership if something like this is covered . Warranties usually are good for 36,000 mi or 3 yrs.
Powertrain Emissions warranties are usually 5yrs , 50,000 mi.

it turns out its the oil cooler lines. ford does not make just the metal lines. have to replace oil cooler and lines. $800. ford will not pay for it. the van is only 4 1/2 years old. the metal lines should not have rotted away so soon.

I am not familiar with any quick fix for this, but depending on the tubing size a good shop may be able to replace just a piece of the tubing at a fraction of the price.

I have an 04 Freestar, but wouldn't think that the 07 would be any diffent build wise as far as the engine compartment would go.

With that said...The only metal lines that I know of that run down the passenger side frame rail are the HIGH and LOW pressure lins for the A/C. Are you seeing GREEN? If so, it's the LEAK DETECTION in the A/C oil. If this is the case, you will need to replace the lines. Then pull a vacuum and recharge the A/C system. Depending on how much oil was lost (probably not nore than 1 oz.), add some oil to the system. I would also go ahead and have the orifice inspected for internal debris and replaced and the accummulator replaced also. To be dome properly, the accummulator replacement should be done any time the A/C system is opened for any reason.

i got the van back from ford. it was an oil cooler line. they had to replace the whole oil cooler.
