Good afternoon everyone. Only my second post after intro as new member.
No matter what I read I cannot get info as to the correct operation of the twin cooling fans on my 2006 Ford Freestar. Owners manual does not discuss this system. Can anyone give me specifics as to exactly how this system should work properly? I believe I have a problem but need specifics to diagnose. Thanks for any help you can offer!

 

Both fans will only come on when additional engine cooling is required (such as extended idling times). They will automatically come on when the A/C it turned on to move air over the condensing unit. Normally they will only run at LOW speed to remove the heat. If it's very warm out and the A/C is running the fans will step up to HIGH speed to help in moving air across the condensing unit and to remove the excess engine heat.

Both fans operate in tandem, so if you have one that is not on with the other, or one running on LOW and the other on HIGH, you have a fan/switch issue.

Many thanks for your thread response to my fan issue. It was just the answer my tech needed. We found a blown 40A. fuse in the relay centre for the fans. Quick fix done. all is normal. No 747 takeoff while idling!

I would carry an extra 40 amp fuse ! Something had to happen to cause the fuse to blow ,especially a 40 amp fuse, heavy drain ! If the cause was found , disregard my suggestion. If not, chances are good it will happen again. Don't want to cause you unnecessary worry, let's hope you never have to use the extra fuse.

 

FSGB, no problem on the response and info. that's what we're here for. Also good suggestion from HANKY. I always carry a full set of fuses in my vehicles cause "You never know". I also rotate serpentine belts. When I replace one on my vehicle, I clean the old one and keep it for a spare.

 

Hey, Hanky, thanks for the info! My tech guy supplied me with extra fuses. We found, upon testing that something minor was obstructing the right side fan. It seemed to clear itself and both working perfectly after several miles of driving.

 

Thanks for the update, and those of us that have been stuck on the side of the road or in the middle of nowhere and parts are just not available have learned to keep a few things tucked away in the trunk or under the seat. You know how the story goes, if you have it, chances are you may never need it, like old belt, wiper blade, spare headlight bulb and so on. Just take them out figuring, "I'll never use these things" and yep, the next day you need one of them to get home or off the road. Use Common Sense gave you some good advice.

 

Hi, new to the forum.... found this when searching for ford edge specific issues with fans. Assume that the fan unit and its control logic are common to many other Fords.... so both fans normally run regardless of temperature and spool up/down to manage temp/airflow? and not that the drivers side (LHS looking up at back of rad from under the car) runs with the AC and the passenger side only runs when it gets up too hot?

Couldn't get a straight answer from the garage who could only tell me "visually they assessed it not to be working" then later said intermittently, then said it was a whole new unit required at around 800 USD (2500 AED), then wouldn't release my car as it was a safety concern.... told them to do full diagnostic report and feed back. Cant abide getting taken for a ride like that.... if its defective ok, take my money but not without some more concrete proof; sorry!
