2004 Freestar compressor oil - how much?
 

I am replacing a failed compressor on my 2004 Freestar. Can someone tell me the capacity of oil I Need to add into the compressor before installation?

The below specifications assume that A/C system has been properly cleaned, and new accumulator/dryer has been installed. Specs are for total system capacities.

Front A/C only = 10 oz. oil
Front & Rear A/C = 13 oz. oil

Front A/C Only = 36 oz. R-134a
Front & Rear A/C = 53 oz. R-134a

Failed compressor? Did you do the following?

1. Replace the Accumulator/Dryer
2. Replace the Condensor (These are NON-Flushable)
4. Flush all lines
5. Replace the front orifice
6. Replace the expansion valve if you have rear A/C

If the above is not preformed, you'll probably suffer early compressor failure due to oil starvation caused by debris plugging the new orifice/expansion valve back up.

When adding the oil, put about 3-4 oz into the new compressor and the rest into the new accumulator/dryer. Then after installing the compressor and before you put the drive belt on, turn the compressor by hand a few trurns to ensure that the compressor will not be liquid locked by the oil that has been added to it.

I am in the middle of a similar repair and this is the first I have heard of addressing the rear expansion valve. Can you tell me where it is located? Is it serviceable? Can I remove it and flush it?

The rear expansion valve is located behind the left rear interior panel. It takes a little disassembly to remove the panel. Once the panel is off, you'll see the rear evaporator. The expansion valve is on the botton side and easy to remove. Is it servicable, No. Flushable? Probably, but for the price of a new one, I'd rather know that the expansion valve is new and not one that could cause issues later.
