Windstar always dies in reverse

Hi all!

Over the past couple of months my 03 Windstar have began stalling when put in reverse. It was possible to prevent the stall, if the brake was not used, and you accelerated in reverse (not always possible in a built up city).

Its now at the point when it will continue to stall and may take 10 attempts to reverse out of a space.

Any trouble shooting tips I might carry out to nullify this problem?

To clarify it stalls when reverse is selected and my foot comes off of the break.

Any input appreciated.... apart from 'don't park against walls' or 'only shop at stores that are not busy' :)

There are a number of things worth checking. The PCM adjusts idle according to numerous factors, including if it is in gear or if the brake pedal is depressed.

Therefore: check if all the brake lights are working. Even one burnt out bulb could affect the voltage signal.
Check if the BOO switch is o.k. BOO stands for Brake On-Off. The Haynes manual states that a faulty BOO switch can affect idle.

Check the Transmission Range sensor and its wiring. The sensor sits at the transmission where the shift cable enters.

If that doesn't help then don't park......ah, you told me not to say that!
